Is there 3rd harmonic in 3 phase 3 wire system?
In a balanced three-phase, three-wire system, the third harmonics do not exist in the line-to-line voltages or currents. This is because the balanced nature of the system cancels out the third harmonics.
In a balanced three-phase system, the fundamental frequency is the basic frequency at which the system operates (e.g., 50 Hz or 60 Hz), and the harmonics are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. The third harmonic has a frequency that is three times the fundamental frequency.
For example, in a 50 Hz system, the fundamental frequency is 50 Hz, and the third harmonic frequency is 150 Hz. However, in a balanced three-phase system, the phase angles and magnitudes of the three voltage or current waveforms are such that the third harmonics cancel each other out when looking at the line-to-line voltages or currents.
That being said, if there are non-linear loads or other factors present in the system, it is still possible to have third harmonic currents in the neutral conductor of a three-phase, three-wire system. Non-linear loads can introduce harmonic currents into the individual phases, and if the currents are not perfectly balanced, there can be some residual third harmonic current flowing in the neutral conductor.
Therefore, while the line-to-line voltages or currents in a balanced three-phase, three-wire system do not contain third harmonics, it is possible to have third harmonic currents in the neutral conductor due to load imbalances and non-linear loads.
